how do you like your eggs?

So i was going to write a post about how i broke my foot.. because it was hilarious, but then i got a text from tushie and i started thinking about other things... and i'd like to pose a question to you all.

Tush asked me a while back if i thought her and her boyfriend were meant to be... she asked me to be honest... so of course my heart starts pounding and i ask the gods that gave me a way with words to help me wax poetic, and chose my next sentences wisely.

The subsequent response went something like " well ive never really seen you be 100% yourself with someone and that includes this new guy. You tend to change yourself to make it easier on them to understand you, and also to avoid disagreements. So until i see you being yourself with this guy ill never really know if he's the right guy for you"

i know right? fucking genius. But then that and her text today got me to thinking, everyone changes right? we all go through our own self exploration at one point or another. We sift through the canals of our imaginations and our emotions  to find out what we can do, or wear, or listen to, that will help us understand ourselves, or make others understand us. We try to explain ourselves, We do it through music, clothes, conversational patterns, defense mechanisms, friends and hobbies that change every 5 years or so.

We all have a different catalyst... a spark that makes us look deeper into ourselves, or at life in a different angle... so my question is, does it matter where the spark that begins our self exploration happens?

Theres a part in Runaway Bride where Richard Gere asks all of Julia Roberts exes how she likes her eggs. Each one of them has a different response... "sunny side up, same as me" or   "eggs benedict, same as me."  Julia's character changes what she likes with each guy she meets... right down to the eggs. Which is pretty much what tush does in each of her relationships... dont get me wrong shes not the only one and im not trying to single her out or make her sound like an idiot, although there was a time when this behaviour got my back up.

But ive been wondering lately... does it really matter if she changes her style of eggs? i mean as long as she got to try them all in least once? try new things! thats what lifes about anyway right? So maybe it starts with trying a new style of breakfast, and then you start to change the places you like to have your meals, then maybe the company you have those meals with, does it matter that the change started because you emulated your preferences?

Its a catalyst... it starts the process of adventure, of self discovery and a more mature palate.

Or should we just know that we need to start getting to know ourselves better and how... do we have some sort of timer for that? some sign in the imaginary road that says "this way to change, please note itll be ten years till the next road so you should probably jump on now... everyone else has"

i dunno... i guess there was a time when i thought that i knew who i was, and what i wanted, and no fucking way were you going to try and change me... ill change me when im good and ready! but if a man comes along that makes me think that the time is now,  and it so happens that through him i find new things, does that mean im letting someone else change me? or will it just be time to be taught new tricks regardless of the teacher?

I totally "got" that part of the movie. So many women (myself included) seem to become a chameleon to what and who their "one" wants them to be. I do it with friends as well as family. Terrible habit that I desperately hope to break one day. I stress it to my adult daughters...BE YOURSELF! Its okay to change our likes if we want to but never change who you are for someone else. You will totally lose yourself & get lost along the way. Seriously~
great post!
