Okay so i am currently planning a bachelorette trip for my cousin to Montreal. Now i love my cousin, and yes of course i would do this for her under any circumstances, but i am not in the wedding party and am just cringing under the pressures of making her and her friends happy with my choices. Isn't this what the maid of honor is for?
Here's the thing.. i hate weddings. its not because im a souless creature who doesnt entirely believe in holy matrimony... well, okay its not that im souless!
I mean i love getting all dressed up, and of course i love the food.. because the way to my heart is most def. through my stomach, but other then all that, their just ackward! and that ackward feeling doesn't just come from the decision of who is going to get on the dance floor first and attempt to make some corny song seem cool to rock to. Its not just about making a day perfect for 2 people, its about making it perfect for the whole hall! now have you ever tried to make a day perfect before? its impossible. what if it rains? what if its cold? what if your $5000 dress rips? what if your bridesmaids are assholes? and all of the events leading up to the wedding are ridiculous to! the showers and jack and jills? it costs money for everyone around you just so you can say "i do" infront of a priest! and heaven forbid you get divorced after all of that! i mean there must have been some pretty pissed off people when my parents got divorced.. i saw the video for that one, no ice scultpure or fog machine was spared!
Italians are pretty ridiculous when it comes to weddings. its not normal, and this frenzy generally revolves around the buosta! the buosta is a little box they keep at the front of the "meet and greet" line as i call it. A typical italian wedding will have about 400 to 600 guests. the reason for this? because what would our cousins say back in italy if our family didnt invite your grandfathers brothers best friend, and all his god damn friends.. just an example but this sort of thing def. happens, and its alot of pressure. Anyway, so they all come in and drop their cash for you at the front of the line and its pretty much manditory. why is it manditory?
Let me tell you a story about my grandmother and you'll understand. What im about to tell you is a typical thing, i swear to god it happens at a lot of weddings, everyone knows this kind of person. If the wedding is in my nonna's immidiate family she will take out a list of all the people invited, and next to their names she will write the amount that they put in. She does this, not only to gossip about how little someone put in, or praise another person for how much, BUT also so that the next event that she is invited to by someone on the list will recieve the exact same amount they put in at the wedding! So its pretty much all a trick and judgement plan.
I dont blame her its how she was raised to do things back in italy and its the way she continues to do them here because of that. But this is exactly what weddings are all about. your love and respect for another person all comes down to that little box on that table outside the hall! Oh not to mention how quickly you R.S.V.P or what you wear and how you act. Its a show and its hardly ever about the bride and groom!
That being said... i cant wait for mine :)
