My Hero

When i was 5 years old i was in my first relationship.

I've heard a lot of kids had an issue with being left at kindergarden for the first time, i was not one of those kids. I had a strong belief that people liked me. I was funny, and i was happy, and i had lots of half clothed barbies at home that i was willing to share, really what wasn't there to like?

So i got up and ready for my first day, shaking with excitement to meet my new best  friends. I wore my best pink dress, my best scrunchie, i filled up my kermit the frog knapsack carefully and i was ready to meet the bitches.

My mom escorted me into the long, bright classroom where she left me to do my thing.  The center of the room was a wide round circle of capet, the rest of the floor was green lynoleum. The room was divided into two sections "play" and "work" the carpet cirlce was work, the other side had all the tools for play: paintbrushes, tricycles,  and building blocks half the size of most kindergardeners.

I quickly joined the circle carpet where we all introduced ourselves one at a time as the teacher instructed. When it was my turn to go around the circle and shake hands, i did so as a princess meeting her people. Hand out, fingers pointing towards the ground " im connie, nice to meet you" i said to each person, the other hand on my pretty dress.

Thats when i met Jason, he took my outstretched hand and kissed it " nice to meet you babe"  So i told him he would be my boyfriend, i dont recall him agreeing to the arangement, but as with most boys, he didnt have much of a choice.

We did everything together. We played kissing tag, we were married under the jungle gym as ninja turtle and wicked witch, we even went down the death defying big kid slide together.

One day we decided we should have a house to live our ninja/witch lives in, so we began to build our dream home with the oversized blocks. We built a circle of them around us and then began to seperate the outside world by building the blocks up around us. Thats when another classmate, who was overseeing the construction, decided we should have a window  and took a block out from the middle of the wall. The blocks swayed back and forth, back and forth, while i watched in horror thinking about how much it was going to hurt when they finally fell on us. Jason ran towards me, put his little body over mine, and shielded me just in time for the avalanche.

When the teachers got us out and inspected us for injuries, Jason turned to me with his bloody nose and said " i got you babe" My hero.

What i hadnt realized was that this moment would perfectly outline my high expectations for the male population.... i have always believed i, in someway, would need a hero.  Until now, now that  i moved out into the world just as scary as the big kid slide, and have had to juggle things just as big as the oversized building blocks....now i got me, i think im ready to be the hero.

I often wonder though what trouble Jason must have made for the ladies when he finally grew into those lines of his, i always knew how to pick trouble.
